What is one thing you would do to encourage more young adults to live in Greater Sudbury?

I will say that it's never just "one thing" but a series of initiatives that come from youth and young adults. Council can never presume to know what "the community" wants for it's made up of so many small parts that make the whole. Engagement, talking, is key. So is creating an inclusive culture. I want to work at making Sudbury an Age Friendly City, which goes well beyond addressing the needs of seniors. It's children, people in wheelchairs, parents pushing strollers, youth, young adults.

How would you address homelessness and addictions in Greater Sudbury?

I've worked on the homelessness and affordable housing file for decades. It's a complex problem with humans at the other end of it. Collaboration, using Best Practices, equipping service organizations to reach a greater number of people. Same for addictions. This socio-economic and social problem is part of our human experience and one that needs constant attention.

If you could start over with roads in Greater Sudbury, how would you develop the transportation network to improve quality of life?

Tough question. Geography, rock, swamp, clay...that's what we have. We also have 3500 linear km of roads...there's no starting over. What would I do now? Building a more extensive Active Transportation network; improve bus route; get police on the roads ticketing those that speed; good quality sidewalks for the elderly and those with mobility issues. Build it for people...not for cars.

If you were to create your own public art policy for Greater Sudbury, what are three things you would include?

First, you'd have to include a secure funding source to ensure viability; Second, as in other cities, 0.5- 1% for public art; and acquisition/held in trust. Sudbury has a lot of room to grow in its art and culture sectors.

There’s been no major private sector investment in the downtown core for years. Why do you think that is and how would you change it?

Disinvestment has been a result of council decisions, but also of changing shopping trends. Super-sized retails outlets is what consumers have wanted, and cities, not only Sudbury, have provided. That trend is changing. Sudburians want that organic experience of a downtown. Incentives for housing (co-housing or housing stewardships); incentives for art studios; funding sidewalk and road improvement; landscaping; convention centre; & in the best of worlds, the arena. People go where people are.

If given the chance, would you renegotiate the ward system in Greater Sudbury? Elaborate why.

We definitely need to rethink our ward system because it is too cumbersome and too costly. I think the number of wards could be reduced to 8, each with a councillor, and have 3 councillors at large. We need to strategize our way into a stronger and more unified community.

Greater Sudbury’s environment is a work in progress. What would you do to keep our water clean, our trees healthy, and air fresh?

I'm not an expert in that field, so would have to rely on others for that guidance. Sudbury has an abundance of nature that makes it unique, and as such, it should be protected. I just wrote an article for the Star about building Nature Tourism as part of our Economic Development. Sudbury's natural setting is what I love about this place and I will do what is necessary to protect it.

What would you do to foster a healthy business sector throughout Greater Sudbury?

Investment likes consistency and clear vision. I would ensure that the City had a clear vision and a simple and inspiring Official Plan and supporting documents all of which align with the Vision; that departments work cross functionally will break down silos; reduce unnecessary procedures and remove redundant regulations. Creating a One Stop Shop for permitting. Incentivising; supporting business clusters. Being "Open for Business" means doing everything we can to attract investment.
