What is one thing you would do to encourage more young adults to live in Greater Sudbury?

Continue to support the growth of our Cityโ€™s education sector which will promote more cutting edge and high tech jobs. Also of importance to me is continuing to create better neighbourhoods with more for our kids and youths to do - the type of neighbourhoods that instill more pride of place!

How would you address homelessness and addictions in Greater Sudbury?

Studies show that providing secure housing can be somewhat of a fix all for other issues like addiction and unemployment. Having a highly affordable place to live provides a sense of security and self confidence that cascades to other facets of life. So even with the challenges that we know our Housing Department will face in these next 4 years from the Province, we can continue to support these social housing pilots and continue to build the case for more highly affordable housing units.

If you could start over with roads in Greater Sudbury, how would you develop the transportation network to improve quality of life?

There are realities we must face with how our population is spread across our City in various size dense pockets. This precipitates driving, but what I would do is ensure those spokes of the system are functioning well and then ensure that the connections within those pockets are properly designed for all users to be able to safely navigate them. We also need to promote walking, cycling and public transit which will take pressure off our road infrastructure and lengthen their useful lives.

If you were to create your own public art policy for Greater Sudbury, what are three things you would include?

  1. Must have local talent.

  2. Must incorporate themes of our cityโ€™s history or environment.

  3. Include more legal graffiti walls.

Thereโ€™s been no major private sector investment in the downtown core for years. Why do you think that is and how would you change it?

There has been some major investment but mostly for Ministry Ordered work at Rainbow Centre. There are tax increment incentives in place for housing developments as well as facade improvement grants which need to be utilized by the private sector to build more mix use developments with retail on ground floor and residential above. This brings more people into the downtown which creates more demand for the retail. This is how the downtown can change but the Taxpayers cannot be the banker.

If given the chance, would you renegotiate the ward system in Greater Sudbury? Elaborate why.

Yes - we need an element of a hybrid system with some at large councillors to ensure that there is a balance of ward centricity and the view of the City as a whole. I believe this could be achieved with 8 wards and 4 at large councillors. To achieve this Council would have to direct that a Governance review be completed and I believe that with the next term of Council passing the 20 year mark that our City is due for one such review.

Greater Sudburyโ€™s environment is a work in progress. What would you do to keep our water clean, our trees healthy, and air fresh?

Promote the changes in our Official plan (increased waterfront vegetative buffers) through education and the development process. Our Cityโ€™s Source Protection Plan is being implemented. And our Cityโ€™s Forestry program is continually planting new trees. Our trees and waterways work together to provide Greater Sudbury with an amazingly fresh outdoor experience. I will continue to ensure these programs are maintained and strengthened where possible.

What would you do to foster a healthy business sector throughout Greater Sudbury?

Continue to invest in infrastructure renewal (roads, water, buildings and parks) and continue to make affordable strategic investments which show the confidence our City has in itself and attracts multiplicative levels of investment from local businesses and new businesses to the City. Also ensuring that we continue to align the development process into more of a one stop shop allowing businesses to grow responsibly with the greatest ease.
