What is one thing you would do to encourage more young adults to live in Greater Sudbury?

I would work to revitalize our GSDC to attract new business to Greater Sudbury. Young adults will only live in Greater Sudbury if there are good jobs for them, especially those who completed post secondary education in fields ranging from medicine to millwrights.

How would you address homelessness and addictions in Greater Sudbury?

More social housing. 1,000 families on wait lists. Look at the Social Housing portfolio to see where we can find efficiencies. Encourage developers, through incentives, to build more social housing when they are planning a development. Mental health/addiction funding drastically reduced at the prov. level. Lobby for increased funding. 4 pillars:harm reduction, prevention, treatment & enforcement. Talked to many people in the field who agree that prevention is important.

If you could start over with roads in Greater Sudbury, how would you develop the transportation network to improve quality of life?

Develop a transportation network that factors in walkers and bicyclists. Biking paths would be developed with every new road and sidewalks would have been set back further from roads.

I would have worked to remove the rail way tracks which would have us more space downtown as well as trails to the east and west which would unite a great deal of Greater Sudbury.

I would have used the services of urban planners to develop our street network so are road network would have been more efficient.

If you were to create your own public art policy for Greater Sudbury, what are three things you would include?

Sudbury $8/cap Thunder Bay provides $50/cap. Will work to increase our per cap funding to at least the median.
87% Sudburians agree that city should support local arts, culture and heritage organizations. Need to promote our arts and cultural community in central location.
I would like to explore the possibility of creating something like Artscape’s West Queen West in our community.

There’s been no major private sector investment in the downtown core for years. Why do you think that is and how would you change it?

Refocus mandate of GSDC. North Bay added 8 new businesses to its downtown this past summer, as the hub of North we should have been able to attract even more than that.

Property tax for shopping locations is much higher than the prov. average. Building permits, business licenses etc. at city hall takes far too long. I will work to streamline all these processes and reduce the costs and will welcome businesses, large and small to open their business in our city.

If given the chance, would you renegotiate the ward system in Greater Sudbury? Elaborate why.

No, as a motion is before our city council concerning the de-amalgamation of our city and I have been watching the Toronto Council situation. I will watch these two events unfold before I would entertain any decision to renegotiate our current ward system

Greater Sudbury’s environment is a work in progress. What would you do to keep our water clean, our trees healthy, and air fresh?

Minimize water pipe leakages to conserve water and save $6M a year. No practical way to remove salt from a watershed once it has made its way into a water source. Comprehensive system-wide water conservation program to make all users aware of the inherent value of our water resources and delivery system. Development of new practices to remove ice from road ways in an environmentally friendly way, it could also create a market for any new equipment that would result from the research

What would you do to foster a healthy business sector throughout Greater Sudbury?

Comprehensive review of GSDC effectiveness and efficiency. Will undertake to revitalize and refocus the GSDC.

Our development charges, commercial and industrial property taxes, infrastructure service costs and other costs are too high to attract new business. Small business is the backbone of our community and we need to make it easier, quicker and more cost effective for all businesses to see the great potential in opening in Greater Sudbury
