What's your name?
What area are you running in?
What is one thing you would do to encourage more young adults to live in Greater Sudbury?
Having access to non-car transportation is important to many young professionals and young families. I will work to make the Complete Streets initiative a reality, starting with a minimum grid for bike lanes, adding greenways to major streets, and ensuring more people have access to healthier, greener methods of transportation. I will also ensure we support our festivals and arts/culture groups.
How would you address homelessness and addictions in Greater Sudbury?
I want to support our most vulnerable. I will work to bring a safe consumption site to our city, as I believe it is a direly-needed hub for centralized support of our residents with substance use issues. I will push for the creation of more subsidized housing, and more long-term care facilities. I will work to create partnerships with CMHA, PHSD, and other local groups to provide our city's front-line workers (bus operators, librarians, etc.) with mental health first aid and naloxone training.
If you could start over with roads in Greater Sudbury, how would you develop the transportation network to improve quality of life?
Much of North America has the ugly model that covers much of our city - four lanes of traffic, two sidewalks, and big parking lots flanked by box stores. I am very excited about the complete streets policy and if I could start over, secondary and tertiary arterial roads would be complete with greenways, bike lanes and sidewalks. The main "figure 8" of Sudbury - Paris-Notre Dame-Lasalle-Barrydowne-Kingsway-Brady-Ontario-Regent -would parallel Bogota's TransMilenio above-ground bus subway system.
If you were to create your own public art policy for Greater Sudbury, what are three things you would include?
Formation of a Public Art Advisory Committee to oversee a standardized and transparent process through which the City acquires public art for municipally-owned public space through purchase, commission or donation.
A policy to incorporate public art canvases into infrastructure upgrades (new bridge built with mural/graffiti space).
Ensure our a flexible process to facilitate a wide variety of applicants, temporal art, and one that includes an outlet for our First Nations voices and artists.
There’s been no major private sector investment in the downtown core for years. Why do you think that is and how would you change it?
We need to take more pride in the little things that beautify our downtown. When I walk and see flower-beds full of trash and weeds, I get very frustrated. I would like to see more boots on the ground cleaning and caring for our city.
I will work to advertise to young professionals - Come to Sudbury for a big lifestyle, small pricetag. I will work to bring tech industries to Sudbury, and believe that mining technology and advanced manufacturing could bring the next boom to Sudbury's economy.
If given the chance, would you renegotiate the ward system in Greater Sudbury? Elaborate why.
I am in favour of adding ranked ballots to the voting process, but I am not overly concerned with the ward system. I understand the thought behind the original decision to give each outlying committee a bit of the downtown, and it is important post-amalgamation. It's not perfect in any way, but each system is a compromise, and I haven't heard of a much better solution. I am running for in one of the most disparate wards in the city, and it is a challenge but I also learn more about Sudbury.
Greater Sudbury’s environment is a work in progress. What would you do to keep our water clean, our trees healthy, and air fresh?
I think that active and greener transportation is a big part of the equation. I will ensure that we properly advertise our new and improved Sudbury Transit system to constituents, as the new model will be a viable option for a far greater portion of our community. I will work to establish a minimum grid of bike lanes which should reduce our carbon emissions. I also would like to see the city hold an environmental science competition each year to continue our history of green innovation.
What would you do to foster a healthy business sector throughout Greater Sudbury?
I want to work with city staff to bring our Building Services and Planning departments into the 21st century. I believe that there is ample opportunity for streamlining application processes, and working to ensure that policies are clear and consistent for applicants. I think that this is a major barrier at present and that it is crucial for creating a healthy business sector. I would also like to work with the BIA and other organizations to ensure that their needs are being met by the city.
